Good Work Deserves Better Clothes

Why good identity design matters for non-profits, charities and organisations doing important work, especially when time and budgets are tight.
Non-profits are often expected to perform minor miracles with half a budget, three volunteers and a printer that has been threatening retirement since 2006.
Design understandably ends up down the list.
The problem is that people still judge what they see.
I worked on an identity for an organisation whose existing materials were doing the job technically, but not emotionally.
Everything was there. Nothing quite belonged together. It felt less like an organisation and more like several documents that happened to know each other.
That matters.
Not because charities need expensive-looking logos. Quite the opposite.
Good identity design creates trust because it shows care.
The same care going into the work should leave clues in how the organisation presents itself.
A clear visual identity also makes life easier internally. People know which logo to use. Colours stop breeding overnight. Every poster doesn’t begin with someone asking where last year’s Word document went.
For organisations already stretched thin, that matters more than design theatre ever will.
A rebrand shouldn’t make a non-profit pretend to be bigger, slicker or more corporate than it is. It should help the organisation look more like itself. Clearer. More recognisable. Easier for its own people to use.
Important work doesn’t need expensive clothes.
It does deserve clothes that fit.
